Tribal Police

The department’s mission is to provide a safe, welcome, and orderly environment for the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi community, defend the sovereignty of the Band and the rights of all the people in its jurisdiction, and assist in improving the quality of life for all Pokagon citizens. Our Police Department consists of highly educated, trained men and women who put their lives on the line every day to protect the membership and the surrounding community.

Responsibilities

The Pokagon Band Police Department has been serving its citizens and visitors since 2003, and it continues to assist agencies in the tribe's geographic boundaries within its ten-county service area of Michigan and Indiana, as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation. A tribal officer can expect to be involved in everything from conservation and gaming law, to violent crime responses and investigations.

Tribal policing is unique in that an officer must be knowledgeable in state, federal, and tribal law. It is crucial to have qualified tribal officers whose primary function is to protect citizens, assets, and lands.

Our Tribal Police Officers are licensed under Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES), deputized by Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren Sheriff’s Offices as Sheriff Deputies, and commissioned as federal officers by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
