The Pokagon Band Language Program offers programs and classes for those interested in learning the Potawatomi language. Learn more about the language here.

Language Contest

Pokagon Language Program invites Potawatomi citizens to participate in a contest to win a T-Shirt designed by Walpole Island Potawatomi. The Pokagon Language Program will choose 2 Pokagon citizens and 2 non-Pokagon Potawatomi citizens as winners.

To enter for a chance to win a T-Shirt, write three English sentences using our Potawatomi Writing System identified below:

For example: Did you see the goat? | Ded yê si thë got?

Submissions

  • The longer the sentence you attempt, the more points awarded
  • Submit to kyle.malott@pokagonband-nsn.gov
  • List: Full Name, Potawatomi affiliation, and mailing address for shipment info
  • Dealine to send submissions is Friday, June 2, 2017

Monthly Language Workshops

The monthly language workshops are taught by our language apprentices and are held once a month.

Language book series available

The Language Program has a supply of new and updated Jim Thunder language series, which consists of Books 1, 2, and 3. The Program also has Jim Thunder's book titled "Medicines of the Potawatomi" which provides information about and Potawatomi language on traditional medicines that have been used for many generations. The cost of Jim Thunder's three book series is $15, and the medicine book is $5.
