Earn the Tribal Leadership Certificate at Southwestern Michigan College

If you're interested in contributing to your tribal government or tribal enterprise, consider sharpening your skills while studying for the Tribal Leadership Certificate that the Pokagon Band helped develop at SMC. Students gain a broad understanding of business and specific applications in tribal settings.

Classes include accounting, business management, Native American history and policy, and proposal writing. Introductory and intermediate Potawatomi language classes taught by Pokagon citizen Kevin Daughtery can be taken as part of the certificate.

This fall semester the following courses will be offered at SMC’s Dowagiac campus: Potawatomi Language 101 Tuesday and Thursday 2:20 - 3:50 p.m., Native American History Tuesday and Thursday 4:00 - 5:00 p.m., and Educational Exploration Thursday 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. with Department of Education’s own Polly Mitchell. Contact Polly at (269) 462-4294 for more information.
